Schizophrenia & Psychosis
Schizophrenia isn't a split personality. It's a condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality, sometimes making it hard to distinguish what's real from what isn't.
What it is
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality. Psychosis refers to experiences like hallucinations (hearing or seeing things others don't) and delusions (fixed false beliefs).
In Pakistan, schizophrenia is heavily stigmatized, often associated with "jinn" or supernatural causes, which delays proper treatment.
What it looks like in real life
"I hear voices that other people can't hear, telling me things."
"I'm convinced people are watching me, even though I know it doesn't make sense."
"My thoughts get jumbled and I can't organize them anymore."
Mujhe awaazein sunai deti hain jo doosre nahi sun sakte.
Schizophrenia typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood. It affects thinking, motivation, and emotional expression. With proper treatment, many people manage their symptoms and lead meaningful lives.
What it is not
Schizophrenia isn't a "split personality" (that's a different condition). It's not caused by bad parenting or personal weakness. It's a brain condition that can be managed with medication and support.
What treatment involves
Antipsychotic medication is the cornerstone of treatment, helping to reduce hallucinations and delusions. Therapy, social skills training, and family support are also important components.
Early intervention after the first episode of psychosis leads to much better outcomes. The goal is to help the person stay connected to reality and maintain their functioning.
When to seek help now
If you or someone you know is hearing voices, experiencing paranoia, or having beliefs that others don't share please seek help immediately. Early treatment can prevent the condition from worsening and improve long-term outcomes.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
