MBBS, MCPS (Psychiatry)
Consultant Psychiatrist, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Soul Mind Hospital
I have spent most of my working life in rooms where people say things out loud for the first time.
A woman in her fifties who has not slept properly in eleven years and assumed that was simply her nature. A young man whose family brought him in convinced he was possessed. Parents of a five-year-old who had been told, repeatedly, that he would "grow out of it" and who had already lost the years when help would have changed the most.
None of them were rare. That is the part I want you to understand. Pakistan's first nationally representative psychiatric survey found that one in three adults here is living with a mental health condition right now. Around nine in ten of them will never be treated. Not because we lack medicine or evidence. Because we have 0.19 psychiatrists per hundred thousand people—the lowest figure in the world—and because shame reaches most families before a doctor does.
I built SoulMind after years of working inside systems that could not hold the weight of what walked through their doors. I wanted a place where a patient is not a case to be processed, where a family is not made to feel they have failed, and where the standard of care does not depend on how much someone can pay or how well they can explain what is wrong.
So we built more than a clinic. Twenty inpatient beds for acute care and rehabilitation. Psychotherapy and psychological assessment. Child development and therapy services. A multi-specialty outpatient department and our own pharmacy—because the mind does not fall ill in isolation from the body, and because a person who comes here for depression should not have to travel across the city for their blood pressure.
I also write poetry. I mention it because it taught me something clinical training did not: that people rarely have the words for what is happening inside them, and that the work of listening is to wait for those words rather than supply them. Diagnosis matters. So does being heard first.
If you are reading this in the middle of a difficult night, or reading it about someone you love—you are not the first person to sit where you are sitting. What you are facing has a name, it has a treatment, and it has a door. Ours is open.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
