Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder isn't just mood swings. It's a condition that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels cycling between intense highs and deep lows that can last days or weeks.
What it is
Bipolar disorder involves episodes of mania (elevated mood, energy, and activity) alternating with episodes of depression. The shifts can be dramatic and can significantly disrupt a person's life.
In Pakistan, bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as depression or dismissed as personality. Many people spend years without a correct diagnosis.
What it looks like in real life
"During my highs, I don't sleep for days and spend money I don't have."
"Then I crash and can't get out of bed for weeks."
"My family thinks I'm just moody, but it's so much more than that."
Kabhi itna khush hoon ke sab theek lagta hai, kabhi sab andhera ho jata hai.
Manic episodes can feel wonderful at first increased creativity, confidence, and energy but they often lead to poor decisions, damaged relationships, and in severe cases, psychosis.
What it is not
Bipolar disorder isn't moodiness or being "two-faced." It's a serious neurological condition that can be managed with proper treatment. Without it, the episodes tend to become more frequent and severe over time.
What treatment involves
Bipolar disorder is primarily treated with mood stabilizers, which help prevent the extreme mood swings. Therapy helps with coping strategies, understanding triggers, and maintaining stability.
Lifestyle factors like regular sleep, avoiding alcohol, and stress management are also crucial. Treatment is usually long-term, but it allows people to live full, productive lives.
When to seek help now
If you've noticed periods of unusually high or low mood that last days or weeks, if your behaviour during these periods is causing problems, or if you're experiencing depressive episodes early assessment can provide clarity and a path to stability.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
