Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression isn't just the "baby blues." It's a serious condition that can affect mothers in the weeks and months after birth, making it hard to bond with your baby or cope with daily life.
What it is
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a form of depression that can develop in the weeks and months following childbirth. It's caused by a combination of hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the emotional demands of new parenthood.
In Pakistan, new mothers are often expected to be "overjoyed" making it difficult to admit they're struggling. This silence can delay treatment and increase suffering.
What it looks like in real life
"I love my baby, but I don't feel the connection everyone talks about."
"I cry for no reason, and I feel so guilty for not being happy."
"I'm scared to be alone with my baby because I don't trust myself."
Mujhe apne bachay se pyar hai lekin khushi nahi ho rahi.
Some mothers experience overwhelming sadness, others feel numb or disconnected. Some have intrusive thoughts about harming themselves or their baby, which can be terrifying but are a symptom, not a reflection of who they are.
What it is not
PPD isn't a sign of being a bad mother, and it's not something you can "snap out of." It's a medical condition with hormonal and neurological components, and it responds well to treatment when addressed early.
What treatment involves
Treatment typically includes therapy, and in moderate to severe cases, medication. Some antidepressants are safe during breastfeeding. We also address practical factors like sleep, support systems, and bonding with the baby.
Partners and family members can play a crucial role in recovery. We often involve them in the process to create a supportive environment.
When to seek help now
If you're experiencing persistent sadness, difficulty bonding with your baby, thoughts of self-harm, or feeling overwhelmed beyond what feels manageable please reach out. You don't have to go through this alone, and help is available.
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
