What a first consultation involves
A first consultation is unhurried. We take a full history — not only your symptoms but your sleep, your work, your family situation, your physical health and your medication history. Where relevant we investigate physical causes, because thyroid disease, vitamin deficiency and several common medications can produce symptoms that look exactly like a psychiatric illness.
We then explain our thinking to you before recommending anything.
If you have been struggling with your mental health, you do not need a referral to see a psychiatrist. You can book directly.
If medication is recommended
We tell you what it does, how long it takes to work, what side effects to expect, and how long you are likely to need it. Most antidepressants take two to four weeks to show benefit and are not addictive. Where a medicine does carry dependence risk, we say so explicitly and monitor it.
Where medication is not the right answer, we say that too.
Conditions we treat
The hardest step is the first one. Most of our patients tell us afterwards that they waited too long. You do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or the right words. You only need to call.
